Hyssop essential oil has messages for us right now!
This morning, in the way an oracle card can 'jump' for your attention, this bottle of Hyssop essential oil that I bought from a gorgeous apothecary on Crete last September, literally jumped out of my bag of oils, vying for my attention. So, as we move towards Autumn / Fall equinox, I'd like to share about Hyssop oil.
Please note the contraindications for hyssop: Hyssop is an emmenagogue, so should be avoided during pregnancy. Hyssop is highly potent and should be used sparingly. Those suffering from epilepsy or high blood pressure should avoid this oil altogether.

Traditionally, hyssop is particularly recommended for treating conditions of the upper respiratory tract, to open a tight chest and make coughs more productive. It soothes the itch of eczema. As a room aroma it can protect against bacteria and is thus a useful support for convalescence. It lifts the spirit and helps concentration if used in moderation.
Magically, hyssop oil can be used in cleansing waters to purify temple or ritual spaces. It is a powerful protection oil that keeps negative energies at bay. It can be used for aura cleansing and to consecrate magical tools. It is a good oil for meditation as it is spiritually uplifting and can help to centre the mind.
The Essenes were an extremely ascetic Judaic sect at the time of Yeshua. They were said to ‘eat nothing of a costly character, but plain bread and a seasoning of salt, which the more luxurious of them to further season with hyssop; and their drink is water from the spring; for they oppose those feelings which nature has made mistresses of the human race, namely, hunger and thirst, giving them nothing to flatter or humour them, but only such useful things as it is not possible to exist without.’
The bible does not mention the Essenes, perhaps as their practices were too ascetic for the mainstream Jewish community, perhaps because the Essenes were largely wiped out by the wars with Rome following the destruction of the Jewish temple; many believe however that Yeshua trained in an Essene community, attended an Essene monastery in Egypt, and that he was an initiate of the Essene secret teachings.
There are multiple biblical references to the use of of Hyssop for cleansing, purification and protection purposes. Additionally, one of the most famous references to Hyssop is as the stalk that supported the sponge of liquid that was offered to Yeshua on the cross.... Hyssop perhaps only has a 'supporting' role in that verse of John, but I feel that Hyssop has some strong messages for us right now.
If you are feeling in need of spiritual protection right now, and you are not contraindicated to use Hyssop essential oil, I would recommend diffusing Hyssop around your home.
Would you like to learn how to work deeply with essential oils as sacred, devotional practice, as Mary Magdalene and her fellow myrrhophore (oil-bearing) priestesses would have?
My foundational, flagship 13 week Magdalene Myrrhophore Mysteries course restarts in October and I would love to have you as part of the cohort. Please get in touch if you’d like to have a short call to decide if this is for you!
Love,
Donna
